Data Access Beans The remainder of this chapter focuses on a different aspect of the relationship between the middle tier (business logic of the Web/application server) and the third-tier (data case server) To access the datasource, the middle-tier application code typically uses the JDBC API (assuming that the datasource is JDBC-compliant) Data access beans are a possible alternative to JDBC (which is also known as a javasql package) The idea of not using JDBC may seem surprising, since it has already gained stature as the de facto standard for Java database connectivity The motivation for replacing JDBC is implied by the name of IBM's data access beans The JavaBeans programming model provides numerous benefits, not the least of which is the ability to use beans in Integrated Development Environments (IDEs such as VisualAge for Java) in a process of visual composition Visual composition reduces the amount of code that needs to be written, thereby increasing developer productivity Other features of data access beans include the following: Caching of query results The results of an SQL query are retrieved all at once and placed in a cache This allows the servlet (or application) to move freely forward and backward through the cache or to jump to arbitrary rows in the cache When SQL queries are made in JDBC, results are sometimes retrieved one at a time, and only forward iteration is allowed (although this is no longer true in JDBC 2) Updates through cache The cache-holding query results can be manipulated to add, remove, or modify rows These changes can then be written back to the relational database When using this feature, there is no need for you to use SQL to update the database Parameterized query In many situations, the SQL query submitted to the database includes some parameters that are available only at runtime Instead of explicitly composing the string at runtime, data access beans allow the definition of a base SQL query string that has variables in place of some of the actual values Before the query is executed, these variables are replaced with the values The base query is an ordinary SQL query with the variable elements indicated by question marks Metadata Taking the idea of the parameterized query one step further, consider having parameters that are not necessarily strings, but arbitrary Java objects Metadata specifications define how you convert Java objects into SQL data types, and vice versa; the same specifications take care of converting SQL data types to Java types Metadata prevents you from having to spend time and code performing type conversions and string construction when manipulating database information Data access beans have been a part of WebSphere for a while now Starting with version 40, these beans are implemented using JDBC 20 and can leverage the advantages of the datasource interface and connection pooling A simple servlet, which will be used to introduce the different data access beans, is shown here This example uses the same technique for initializing the datasource that was shown in the preceding servlet To enjoy the benefits of connection pooling, we 318.

By default, Query Studio displays 20 rows of data per page when you run your query The number of rows that displays can be increased or decreased Increasing the number of rows that displays reduces the amount of times that you have to page up or page down the query; however, it also increases the amount of data that Query Studio must retrieve to display the query results Increasing the number of rows is helpful if you want to scroll through more of the query instead of paging up or down

The design head loss is very important in determining the effectiveness of the control valve Figure 833 shows a subsystem with a water-type heating or cooling coil, branch piping from supply and return mains, and a control valve This subsystem could easily have a pressure loss of 20 to 25 ft without the control valve For the valve to control accurately, its wide-open pressure drop must be a signi cant fraction of the total subsystem drop, say 35 to 50 percent In this case, a 10 15-ft or greater valve head loss would be required This, of course, adds to the pumping head and therefore increases energy consumption Using variable-speed pumping will offset this, and the combination will allow excellent control with low energy usage A point sometimes overlooked in selecting a control valve for steam (or any compressible uid) is the phenomenon of critical ow The control valve acts as an ori ce, and there is some minimum ratio of downstream to upstream pressure below which ow will not increase therefore, there is a maximum ow through that valve at any given inlet pressure For steam, the ratio is about 053 Most sizing charts and tables include this critical-pressure ratio Valve operators (or motors) may be pneumatic, electric, electronic, or hydraulic Hydraulic operators are used for large valves (8 to 10 in and larger), where the higher control uid pressures (80 to 100 lb/in2) allow the use of smaller operators Electric operators are two-position or modulating mode, the latter using a motor/gear, or magnetic, system which takes 30 s to 2 min to drive from one extreme to the other Electronic operators may be similar to electric, or they may use a stepping motor, which is driven a fractional distance by a short electric pulse; the number and duration of the pulses determine the total distance traveled.
